What Are STIs?

STIs (Sexually Transmitted Infections) are a type of infection that can be spread by sexual contact. They are caused by:

BacteriaVirusesParasites (or lil’ critters)

STIs Are Common

Bacteria and viruses are both tiny germs that can make you sick, but they are very different! Think of bacteria as tiny, independent living creatures, and viruses as "moochers" that need to steal energy from other cells to live.

Acquired - something that develops Immunodeficiency - Immune system does not work as well as it could Syndrome - A collection of different signs and symptoms

Human - an illness people get from other people Immunodeficiency - Immune system does not work as well as it could Virus - a type of infection that has no cure

When HIV becomes advanced and the immune system is so damaged that it can no longer fight off other illness it is called AIDS. When people have AIDS, their body has a hard time fighting off illness like pneumonia that a strong immune system typically can overcome. If HIV is treated, many people with HIV never develop AIDS.
