The theft of the Mona Lisa

It is believed that the Mona Lisa is the world’s most famous painting created by Leonardo da Vinci. Today it resides in the Louvre Museum in Paris, having been stolen in 1911. Museum staff discovered on a hot summer morning that the famous painting had disappeared and thought it had to be in for cleaning. However, they quickly realized that the painting had, in fact, been stolen. The world was in shock and news of the theft was broadcasted around the globe saying that whoever was responsible must pay for their action. The Gioconda was found in Italy two years later, hidden in the home of a former employee, Vincenzo Peruggia, who had stolen it by hidden it under his clothing. His reasoning behind the crime was that such a beautiful piece of art made by an Italian shouldn't be in France. Peruggia was arrested, and the Mona Lisa returned to where it needed to be: Paris. The painting has been seen by millions of tourists since it was last stolen, and after this incident, it continued to receive extensive media coverage on an international scale.
