THE AMAZING JUMPING BAND

This wonderful trick involves making a rubber band magically jump between your fingers. It was invented more than 100 years ago by a clever British magician called Stanley Collins. You will need a rubber band or a hair tie that fits over your first and second fingers. Let me tell you more about your hands. Almost everyone has a dominant and a non-dominant hand. Your dominant hand is the one that you usually write with, and your non-dominant hand is the other one. Most people find it easier to do secret magic moves with their dominant hand. However, if you are struggling to learn a trick, try using your non-dominant hand. The instructions in this book are written as if your dominant hand is your right hand. If you are left-handed then reverse the instructions. Before you perform the trick, you need to get your right hand on the band in the correct position. Put the band over the first and second fingers of your right hand and move it all the way down.

With your left hand, carefullystretch the band towards yourself. Bend all four fingers of your right hand inside the loop of the band and then release the band so that it lies across your fingernails. Now you are ready to perform the trick. Show your friend the back of your right hand. To them, it will look like the band is wrapped around your first and second fingers. Now say the word ‘jump.’ Keeping all your fingers together, quickly open your right hand, pushing the band up with all four fingers. The band will magically jump from your first and second fingers to your third and little fingers.

Great magic is not just about knowing the secret. It is about practice and smooth movements. At first this trick may feel awkward and slow. That is normal. Magicians repeat the same actions again and again until their fingers move without thinking. Try practising in front of a mirror so you can see what your audience will see. Keep your hands relaxed and your movements calm. If you rush the trick, it will look jumpy and give the secret away. Smooth confident actions make the magic feel real. The more you practise the more natural the jump will look and the more amazed your audience will be. Take your time and enjoy learning the trick. Every great magician starts by practising simple moves until they feel easy and effortless.
