Historical Context

The historical context during the Rosa Parks's life (~1955) was very pessimil because there were the racial segregation in the USA, but specifically in Alabama, her country. The segregation consisted of the separation and belittling of black people in the country which made them have less and less rights than whites. The laws that established the separation between blacks and whites were called "Jim Crow".

Why is she famous?

Rosa Parks is famous for opposing racist laws in 1955 by refusing to give up her bus seat to a white man. Her arrest gave it a start to the Montgomery Bus Boycott, a pivotal event in the civil rights movement. Thanks to her courage, Rosa Parks became a symbol of the fight against discrimination and for equality.

Why did she make a different?

Rosa Parks made a difference because her actions inspired many people to fight back against injustice. The Montgomery Bus Boycott led to changes in segregation laws. Her example made others understand that even one person can make a big difference.

Important episodes

  • After her arrest, Rosa Parks worked actively in the civil rights movement with Martin Luther King Jr.
  • She fought for years against segregation, racism, and social injustice, even she was outside her state.
  • She continued to fight for the rights of African Americans, women and young people, becoming an enduring symbol of courage and resistance.

Curiosities

  • Before the bus incident, she was already active in the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People)
  • After the boycott, she lost her job and received threats, but she never stopped fighting.
  • In 1996, she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, one of the highest honors in the United States.
  • She was the first African-American woman to have the honor of being commemorated in the United States Capitol and at her funeral.

Why did I chose her?

I chose Rosa Parks because I think that she was the bravest woman that I have studied yet. Even if she is not known by everyone, I think that her story should be studied because is very important and fundamental to the present day. The other reason I chose her is because her story is fascinating and that could be an example for today's kids.

My opinion about her

I think Rosa Parks was a courageous person for two reasons. The first one is because she was a normal citizen who despite she wasn’t the only one with unjust rights, but that decided to sacrifice herself for others, risking her career. The second reason is because even if the police tried to stop her, she didn’t stop believing and did not give up even when she was in prison and in fact her objective was achieved.
