context
Defoe's novel reflects eighteenth-century England, marked by the rise of capitalism and the bourgeoisie. In a society where money guarantees security, Moll addresses female marginalization and poverty. Between realism and Puritan morality, her story reflects the contradictions of a world torn between economic success and redemption.

2. Marriages, misfortunes and the descent into crime
She married several times, often for financial gain, and had complex relationships, including an involuntary marriage to her half-brother in Virginia, where she later discovered the shocking truth. After losing her husbands and her fortune, she found herself in poverty at the age of 48 and turned to crime to survive, becoming a skilled and notorious thief and pickpocket in London.
3. Arrest, Newgate and the commuted sentence
Her skill in disguise allowed her to evade capture for a long time. She was eventually arrested and sentenced to death. While in Newgate Prison, she reunited with her fourth husband, James (the "Lancashire Gentleman"), also a thief. They both managed to commute her death sentence to transportation to the American colonies.
