Past Simple’s Explanation

The Past Simple is used to talk about actions that were completed in the past. It describes events, routines, or situations that started and finished before now, often with time expressions like yesterday, last week, or ago.

USE OF THE PAST SIMPLE

The Past Simple is used to talk about actions or situations that were finished in the past. It is used for completed events, past habits, and a sequence of actions that happened before now.

Is formed by placing the auxiliary did + not,before the main verb, not in the past tense.

Subject + verb in past + complement.

The structure is: Did + subject + base verb + complement?

Rules and Examples of the Regulars Verbs

For regular verbs, form the past simple by adding -ed to the base verb. work → worked. -Verbs ending in -e Just add -d. live → lived. -Verbs ending in consonant + y Change y → i and add -ed. study → studied. - Verbs ending in vowel + y Just add -ed. play → played. -One-syllable verbs ending in consonant–vowel–consonant (CVC) Double the last consonant, then add -ed. stop → stopped.

Irregular verbs do NOT follow a fixed rule. 👉 You do not add -ed. 👉 Each verb has a different past form . 📌 These forms must be memorized . Examples: go → went see → saw eat → ate buy → bought
