task-based learning (tbl)

definition
- Task-based learning is an approach to language learning where learners are given interactive tasks to complete.
- This practical approach not only develops communication skills in a realistic setting, but also ensures that students interact actively, promoting natural and meaningful learning.
characteristics
Tasks are at the heart of learning
Activities are designed to mimic real-life contexts, such as asking for information or solving problems. Three phases:
- Pre-task: Introduction and preparation.
- Main task: Carrying out the communicative activity.
- Post-task: Reflection, feedback and improvement.
This framework not only provides a controlled environment, but also allows students to develop autonomy and confidence.

This methodology originated in the 1980s, when academics such as Prabhu argued that learning a language through meaningful tasks was more effective than learning structured exclusively around grammar and vocabulary.
pros and cons
Develop comprehensive learning
Some students need more guidance.
They typically translate and use their L1 rather than the target language in completing the tasks.
Flexibility
Student motivation
Teacher requires a high level of creativity and initiative
