03 - Impacts of the storms

BBC video: https://www.bbc.com/news/videos/cwy12gjx88jo

- Flooding- Transport disruptions - General damages - Power & services - Community impact

04 - What causes storms?

• Low pressure systems- Form when warm and cold air masses collide - Air rises quickly → pressure drops → strong winds develop • Seasonal factors - Most common in autumn and winter - Strong jet stream activity • Warmer oceans / climate factor - Warmer sea temperatures can add energy to storms and increase rainfall intensity

05 - Solutions implemented

- Explain the ongoing situation to the population: how to act/protect themselves and others, how are things evolving- Some people had to evacuate their homes due to flooding

06 - Future initiatives

- Plan better food/water/electricity supplies in case of shortages- Teach people how to react during a natural catastrophe (at school/work...) - Invest in more emergency services - Upgrade warning/information systems; use applications to alert population - Build more resistant infrastructures (buildings, transports...)
