what is The Commonwealth ?
The Commonwealth is a group of 56 independent and equal countries. They are linked to Great Britain. All of them were part of the British Empire in the past, except Mozambique. About 2.7 billion people live in the Commonwealth. This means almost one in three people in the world. People in the Commonwealth have many different religions, languages, cultures and traditions. Many years ago, Britain controlled many countries. This was called the British Empire. Over time, these countries became independent. The Empire ended and later changed into the Commonwealth. Today, there are 56 member countries. They all agree on important values like democracy, equality between men and women, peace and safety in the world. The King is the head of the Commonwealth. That is why he officially opens the Commonwealth Games.

The Commonwealth games
The Commonwealth Games take place every four years - and, this year, it will take place in Glasgow, from 23rd July to 2nd August 2026. The Games are based on important values like humanity, equality and shared destiny. The goal of the Games is to bring the Commonwealth countries together through a big celebration of sport. You might remember the last times the Commonwealth Games happened, as they were held in 2022 in Birmingham, England, and 2018 on the Gold Coast of Australia. The event was first held in Hamilton, Canada in 1930, when 11 countries sent a total of 400 athletes to take part.
More than 3,000 athletes from 74 nations are expected in 10 sports over 11 days. So you can see how much the games have grown since they started.
