Étymol. et Hist. 1. Fin xiie-début xiiie s. Centaurus « animal fabuleux, moitié homme moitié cheval » (Gervaise, Bestiaire, 329, éd. P. Meyer ds Romania, t. 1, p. 340) ; xiie-xiiie s. centaure (Hector de Troie, Doc. hist. inéd., 3, 362 d'apr. Delboulle ds Quem.) ; 2. 1732 astron. nom d'une constellation (Trév.). Empr. au lat. centaurus qui désignait des héros mythologiques ayant la forme d'un animal fabuleux et est attesté également comme nom d'une constellation (TLL s.v. 320, 52 et 321, 62). Le lat. est empr. au gr. κ ε ́ ν τ α υ ρ ο ς qui désignait d'abord une race grossière et barbare de la région du Pélion et de l'Ossa en Thessalie (Iliade ds Liddell-Scott) puis des monstres mi-hommes mi-chevaux (Pindare, ibid.) et est attesté comme nom de constellation dep. le ive s. av. J.-C. (Eudoxus d'apr. Hipparque de Nicée, ibid.).
Symbolisme : Dans les œuvres d'art, le visage du Centaures est généralement empreint de tristesse. Ils symbolisent la concupiscence charnelle, avec toutes ses violences brutales, qui rend l'homme semblable aux bêtes, quand elle n'est pas équilibrée par la puissance spirituelle. Ils sont l'image frappante de la double nature de l'homme, l'une bestiale, l'autre divine. Ils sont l'antithèse du chevalier, qui dompte et maîtrise les forces élémentaires, alors que les centaures, un Chiron et ses frères exceptés, sont dominés par les instincts sauvages incontrôlés. On en a fait aussi l'image de l'inconscient, d'un inconscient qui devient maître de la personne, la livre à ses impulsions et abolit la lutte intérieure.
