Look up in the trees !

Witches'broom disease

Witches’ broom disease is a plant disorder where a tree develops a dense cluster of shoots or branches from a single point, creating a broom-like appearance. This abnormal growth happens because the tree’s normal hormonal and growth patterns are disrupted. The disorder can be caused by fungi, viruses, phytoplasmas, parasitic plants, insects, mites, or even environmental stress like frost or nutrient imbalance. Affected areas usually show stunted, deformed leaves and unusually dense twig clusters. While often primarily cosmetic, severe infestations can reduce fruit production, timber quality, and overall tree vigor. Management involves pruning affected branches, proper sanitation, and, when possible, using resistant tree varieties.
