Obtention of metals
  • Minerals are extracted in open-pit or underground mines.
  • Almost all metals are found in solid state in nature.
  • The useful part of the mineral is separated, called ore, from the waste material called gangue.
  • To do this, the ore is crushed, washed and screened.
  • Then transformation processes are applied: Calcination in furnaces, or Electrolysis
  • Finally, the metal is obtained.

Alloys

An alloy is a mixture of a metal with other elements, improving properties like strength and corrosion resistance. Examples: Steel = iron + small amount of carbon Brass = copper + zinc Bronze = copper + tin Stainless steel = steel + chromium and nickel.
