The History of his Life
Alphonse "Al Capone" was born in 1899 in Brooklyn, to a family of Neapolitan immigrants. The fourth of nine children, he was a fairly good student… until he was expelled at fourteen for hitting a teacher. This marked the beginning of his downward spiral: the teenager now hung out with the neighborhood gangs. At eighteen, while working as a bouncer, a thug slashed his cheek with a razor. The scar would stay with him forever—earning him his nickname: "Scarface."
In 1918, he married Mae Coughlin. Their son, Albert—nicknamed "Sonny"—was born shortly after. The family tried to live honestly in Baltimore, where Capone became an accountant.
But everything changed with his father's death in 1920. His mentor, Johnny Torrio, summoned him to Chicago to join organized crime. With Prohibition, Capone built an illegal empire: alcohol, prostitution, and illegal gambling. In Cicero, he ruled over hundreds of bars and gambling dens. To consolidate his power, he eliminated his rivals and bribed police officers and politicians. At just thirty-one years old, he was already one of Chicago's most feared mob bosses.
On February 14, 1929, the St. Valentine's Day Massacre—a killing spree targeting a rival gang—sent shockwaves across the country. Capone became public enemy number one. Yet, it was impossible to convict him for his violent crimes. It wasn't until 1931 that he was finally arrested… for tax evasion. Sentenced to seventeen years in prison, he was sent to Alcatraz in 1934. His health deteriorated rapidly there. Released for medical reasons in 1939, he died of a heart attack in 1947 in Miami Beach.
