What is it?

Black History Month honors the history, achievements, and contributions of Black Americans. It recognizes the impact of Black individuals on culture, politics, science, and the arts. Additionally, it acknowledges the struggles against slavery, segregation, and racism. Overall it encourages education, reflection, and appreciation of Black culture.

Origin of Black History Month

It dates back to 1926, created by the historian Carter G. Woodson, commonly known as the "Father of Black History". It was created in orfer to highligh Black hisotr which was often ignored. Later on February was chosen as the month for the celebration in 1976.

Key Events

- In 1619 the first enslaved Africans arive in American colonies - In 1865 the 13th amendment ended slavery in the United States -In 1896 Plessy v. Fergueson legalized segregation under the "separate but equal" law - Throughout the 1950s & 1960s the civil rights movement arose fighting for equality - In 1964 & 1965 Civil Rights act & Voting Rights Act were passed

Influential Leaders

Some of the most influencial Black leaders include: -Martin Luther King Jr. (civil rights activist) -Rosa Parks (civil rights activist) -Frederick Douglass (American abolitionist & orator) -Harriet Tubman (social ativist and abolitionist)

Why it matters today

This month is essential in order to ensure Black sotries and voices are not forgotten. It highlights ongoing struggles for racial justice and equality and, at the same time, celebtrates black excellence and cultural influence worldwide. Ultimately, this month reminds us that we must understand the past to help us create a better future.
