Extracting metals

Start

Do Now

1. Give an example of an exothermic reaction A. Photosynthesis B. Sports injury pack C. Respiration 2. What type of bond is formed between metals? 3. Why does reactivity increase as you go down group one? 4. What is displacement?

Do Now Answers

1. Repiration 2. Metalic bonding 3. Because the electron is easier to lose 4. Displacement is when a more reactive metal takes the place of a less reactive metal

What is an ore?

///An ore is a rock or mineral that contains enough metal (or metal compound) to make it economical to extract the metal

+ info

Practice

A scientist finds a rock with a very small amount of aluminium oxide in it. Explain why the rock cannot be called an ore How would you determine if the metal is found in its natural state, wether it needs to be extracted using carbon or usin electrolysis. Francium is more reactive than lithium. How can francium be extracted from francium oxide?

Answers

1. The rock cannot be called an ore because it mould cost more to extract the mtal than it is worth, so there is no poin tin it being extracted as it is not economically explainable2. Metals above carbon need to be extracted with electrolysis and ones below carbon are displaced using carbon 3. Carbon can be extracted using electrolysis

Acids

Acids you need to know are: Hydrochloric acid Sulfuric acid Nitic Acid
