“I’m still trying to fathom how you can grow up in Sheffield and not know about football,” Uncle Jack said. Careful not to say that my dad didn’t want me playing or that I couldn’t read the newspapers, I just said, “People like us and people who live in houses keep away from each other.” “There’s a man I need to tell you about - ” but before he could finish, my dad called me over. “I was just about to tell him about Rab How- ” “I’d rather you didn’t,” said my dad. I was desperate to find out who Rab was, so I asked Henry. “Don’t let me mam or dad know I told yer this, but Rab Howell was a proper footballer in Sheffield – and a Traveller.” It didn’t take me long to find out more from the boys at school; he’d been a hero to some of their dads. Jack told me about Rab Howell, the man who was becoming my hero. He was born in a wagon in a village to a family like mine; he grew up in a similar way; he went to school and didn’t like it; his dad didn’t want him there. Somehow he got into playing football. Uncle Jack said he was a pioneer.

Nobody knows how he became so good at football, but he was, and he played for Sheffield United and England and even scored a goal for them. “Are you sure he was a Romani like me?” I asked Uncle Jack at least three times. He proved it by reading it from one of the newspaper clippings and showed me the word so I could learn it. I had so many questions; why, when this man had lived the life I wanted, was no one in family talking about him? Why, if he was so famous and earning a good living from it, was my dad so against me playing? Why had it taken a Gorja person to tell me? Those questions were soon answered, when we got onto what Uncle Jack called the second half of Rab’s time in football. He had played three important games, things had gone wrong and he’d been accused of letting the other teams win on purpose. Some people said he’d been paid to lose and was a cheat. Uncle Jack said, “But he certainly wasn’t. It was most likely to do with what was going on at the club. Rab never really fit in and was seen as a troublemaker.” Then Uncle Jack lowered his voice, “I don’t know whether I should be telling you this Lijah, but … he was married with children and… he started a relationship with another woman, signed for Liverpool and moved away from Sheffield.” I was shocked but it finally made sense why I’d never heard of Rab before and my mam and dad didn’t want me to play the game.
