In the yard, a group of boys were kicking and chasing after a ball. There seemed to be two teams, each trying to guide the ball to the opposite side of the yard. Henry looked at me and smiled in bemusement. “It’s called football.”
“Have you ever played it?” I asked, keeping my eye on the ball as it was passed from boy to boy.
“Aye, a few times, but it’s not much of a game,” Henry said.
The biggest boy seemed to take exception to us watching him.
“What yer lookin’ at?” he called to us. “Never seen a ball before?”
He stopped the game and came over.
“I know you,” he said, smiling. “Yer one of them tramps that picks up other people’s rubbish. I’ve seen yer on yer cart, like a load of crows.” This brought about a series of nudges, winks and sniggering behind their hands done on purpose to get a rise out of me and it worked because I felt my blood boiling. A big bell rang out loudly. The boys stopped their games and lined up.
About an hour and a half later, the teacher told us it was playtime. In the boy’s yard, I just stood and watched the other children. Everyone seemed to have someone to talk to or play with. I just stood watching and wishing I was back at the camp.

The big lad, Joe, came out and the same group of boys I’d seen playing football earlier continued their game. It fascinated me how one of them could run with the ball and keep it at their feet and then just like magic another player could take it away from them with his feet and go on to score a goal. I wanted to join in but knew they weren’t going to ask me to.
When playtime was over, I sat in silence again, with nothing to think about but football.
On Monday morning, I stood in my usual place next to the wall and watched the game taking place. The game was in full flow – boys shouting to each other to pass the ball, concentrating on kicking it towards the goals, the goalkeeper fearful of the hard leather ball hitting them. One of the lads kicked the ball high in the air. It landed near me and slowly rolled towards my feet.
“Kick it back then – if yer can,” Joe shouted, laughing.
I didn’t have to think twice about it. All that anger, all that standing by itching to play… it all went into my kick. I watched in delight as the ball took off like a cannonball heading straight for Joe – who had to duck – and carried on. It whistled past the goalkeeper.
There was a stunned silence followed by a round of applause.
“What a shot,” one of the lads said, grinning. “You’re on our team now.”
