Hi! Just reaching out to check in. How is the AI selection process is going?
Hi! I am finding that there are limitations to the AI selection process. I feel that we should not continue to use it to pick which candidates we want to interview for the position.
Oh no! What limitations are you seeing?
The AI exhibits several limitations, including bias, hallucinations, and the potential spread of disinformation, as well as privacy and security concerns. Additionally, I discovered that the computational processes required to run AI can have a significant environmental impact, which is a cause for concern.
Thank you for bringing these limitations to my attention. Moving forward, let's manually review the applications to ensure we are following best practices.

Bias & Equity Issues
Where:
- 👉 Educational degree and institution name
How:
- Degree requirements may not correlate with job performance
- School prestige can overshadow skills
AI screening tools may overweight formal education or institutional prestige, potentially excluding qualified candidates with alternative credentials.
Disinformation
Where:
- 👉 “Senior Accountant” and employment dates
How:
- AI may prioritize titles over responsibilities
- Dates don’t show career breaks, caregiving, or non-linear paths
AI screening tools may misinterpret job titles or gaps, overlooking context such as career changes, caregiving responsibilities, or contract work.
Privacy & Security
Where:
- 👉 Email, phone number, location
How:
- Personal data may be stored, reused, or analyzed beyond hiring
- Location can introduce geographic bias
Personal data in resumes may be stored or reused by AI systems. Location and contact details can also introduce unintended bias or privacy risks.
Bias:
Where:
- 👉 On “Sarah Thompson” (the name at the very top)
How:
- Names can signal gender, ethnicity, or cultural background
- AI screening tools may unintentionally associate names with historical hiring patterns
AI systems may infer demographic attributes from names, which can introduce bias—even when protected characteristics are not explicitly provided.
Environmental Cost
Where:
- 👉 The resume as it was generated & the AI analysis it went through
How:
- Encourages systems thinking beyond the document itself
Processing large volumes of resumes with AI requires significant computing power, contributing to energy use and environmental impact.
Bias & Signal Amplification
Where:
- 👉“XYZ Corporation” / “ABC Inc.”
How:
- AI may favor well-known companies
- Candidates from smaller or non-traditional organizations may be undervalued
AI systems may overvalue recognizable employers, reinforcing prestige bias and disadvantaging equally qualified candidates from lesser-known organizations.
Hallucinations
Where:
- 👉 Professional summary paragraph
How:
- Summaries use self-reported, unverified claims
- AI may treat confident language as evidence
AI systems often cannot verify claims made in summaries. Confident wording may be weighted more heavily than accuracy.
Keyword Bias / Hallucinations
Where:
- 👉 Bullet list of soft and hard skills
How:
- AI often relies on keyword matching
- Missing or differently worded skills may be ignored
AI systems often prioritize keyword matches, which can disadvantage candidates who describe skills differently or use non-standard terminology.
