Introduction:
The Age of discovery was a period between the 15th and 17th centuries and European countries explored new parts of the world. This explorers travelled between oceans to discover new lands and new routes. This period of the history is very important because it connect different continents for the first time and changed world. There were several reasons why Europeans wanted to explore:
However, colonisation also had negative consequences. Many inocent people lost their land and territories. Also, some languages and traditions disappeared and diseases brought by Europeans caused a big decreament in native population. This voyage was financed by the spanish monarchy. In this project we will explain the first voyage of Christopher Columbus and why was so important for history.

To sum up, the first voyage of Christopher Columbus was one of the most important trips in the whole history transforming the world. The age of discovery created new oportunities but it also caused sufering for many indigenous people. Nowadays, we study this period to understand how the modern world that we know was formed and to learn the mistakes that people have made in the past.
- As we seed before, the main motivation was money. Trade with Asia was expensive and slow, so explorers tried to find new and inovated routes.- Religion also played an important role, Europeans believed it was their responsability to expand Christianity. - Another motivation was fame because succesful explorers became famous and respected for the rest of their lives. Christopher Columbus is a good example because he believed he could reach Asia by sailing the west and risk it all to go famous and find and cotroll wealth.
Columbus journey connected Europe and America permanently and soon other explorers followed and they created new colonies. Also, trade routes expanded across the Atlantic Ocean and products like potatoes, corn and tomatoes arrived to Europe. At the same time, european animals and crops arrived into America. This eschanges transformed Americans diets, economies and cultures. People experienced colonisation in different ways. For Europeans, meant wealth, land and power but for many indigenous people comunities, mean loss of land, cultural changes and sometimes forced labour. We can still se the efects of the age of discovery nowadays. Many countries in America speak Spanish, English or Portuguese because of colonisation. Is good to know that modern global trade started during this period and because of this,the world become more connected than ever before.
POLITICAL REASONS:
There were many political reasons. Kings and queens wanted to be more powerful than other countries kings and queens. Have colonies meant having more land, more resources and more influence.
In the early modern age, europe was changing a lot, new inventions like better maps and navegation tools helped sailors travel furder than before.Countries, such as, Spain and Portugal competed to discover new territories because they wanted to control trade and have access to wealth. Travelling by sea was still very dangerous, sailors didn't know exactly what where they looking for and what they would found. In fact, some people believed that there were sea monsters. Despite the risks, exploration continued because the possible rewards were very big and they were greedy and patriotics.
This was the hardest part of the voyage and for many weeks the sailors only saw water. Because of that, the crew became nervous and some crews thought they would never be back home. There were moments when the crew wanted to rebel against Columbus but Columbus convinced them to continue the voyage and he promised they would find land soon. Finaly, after more tan two months they saw land.This part of the journey shows us the determination of the explorers and that they waned to get their goal.
Hispaniola (Haiti, Dominican Republic):
After beeing in Cuba, Columbus arrived at Hispaniola. During he was there, the Santa María vessel crashed on a reef and was destroyed. With the ships remains, the crew built a small boat called La Navidad. Columbus left some men there to colonize the lands and returned to Spain with the other two ships. This was one of the first european setlements in America and marked the begining of the Spanish colonisation. Long term Consequences: - Spain became one of the most powerful empires. - Trade between continents increased a lot. - New products travelled between Europe and America. - The global economy changed very drasticly and forever.
San salvador (Bahamas):
On the 12th of October of 1492, Columbus arrived in a island at the Bahamas and he named it San Salvador. Columbus tought he was in Asia but he had arrived to America. The expedition meet indigenus people called Taíno and, at first, the encounters were peaceful and friendly. Also, Columbus wrote that the people there were kind and generous. However, this arrival was the beginning of european colonisation and it has positive and negative effects.Impact on Indigenous Cultures: - Europeans introduced new languages to the indigenous people. - Christianity was spread trough the territory landed. - Diseases arrived at the territory. - Many traditions were lost over time with the arrival of Columbus.
Canary Islands:
The boats stopped at the Canary Islands to prepare for crossing the atlantic ocean and they repaired the Pinta and collected food and water. This stop was very important because after leaving the island there was no more land until arrive to America.Challenges that they had at the voyage: - They had strong winds during the voyage. - They needed a good navegation system. - The preparation for a very long trip. This was the last moment to turn back but they continued becausee of their goals.
ECONOMIC REASONS:
Economic reasons were very important, countries wanted gold, silver, spices and other valuable products. They also wanted faster trade routes to go to Asia.
Palos de la Frontera:
Christopher Columbus started his journey on 3 August 1492 from the port of Palos.He travelled with three ships: The Niña, The Pinta and The Santa María. The catholic monarchs of Spain, queen Isabella and king Ferdinand, supported the expedition because they hoped to win wealth and power. Columbus wanted to find a short route to Asia but he didn't know that another continent was in the middle of it. Some challenges: - Sailors were scared to the unknown. - The trip was long. - Many supplies were limited. This shows how brave Columbus was.
Cuba:
After exploring San Salvador, Columbus decided that was Cubas time to be explored and he thought it could be part of China, because he believed he was in Asia. Columbus searched for gold and valuable resources but did not find large amounts of it. Spain was very interested in these lands because they could bring economic benefits to the country. This shows how this exploration was mostly connected to wealth and trade.
RELIGIOUS REASONS:
Religious reasons influenced exploration, many europeans wanted to spread Christianity to other parts of the world. Nowadays we can se that many countries of America are Christians.
