Political literacy involves understanding how decisions are made and who makes them, at local, national, and global levels. This could include exploring how schools, councils, or governments operate, how laws are made, and how citizens can influence change through actions such as petitions, campaigns, or voting.

Agency is about pupils seeing themselves as people who can effect change. This could include making decisions about class rules, improving their school environment, or campaigning on issues they care about.

Capacity is about building the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to participate actively in civic and political life. This might include developing communication and critical thinking skills, volunteering or joining local groups, or taking part in democratic processes such as elections.

Awareness focuses on recognising that people hold different values, beliefs and viewpoints. By discussing real issues and dilemmas, pupils learn how to listen respectfully, express their views, and resolve disagreements democratically.
