Land Use Change
key definitions
Land artificialisation
Floor waterproofing
Occupation or use of land that alters its natural functions:
Impossibility of biophysical exchanges (air, water, etc.) between the underground and aerial layers of soil
- Biological, hydrological and climatic functions Agronomic potential
Land Use Change
Real estate: the main consumer of space
The property and urban development sector is the main contributor to these pressures.
Land artificialisation is increasing almost four times faster than the population.

The real estate sector in question
Natural resources used throughout the building's life cycle:
- Materials (sand, wood, etc.)
Impact on biodiversity
It is therefore essential to prioritise materials that have already been extracted.
Degradation of soil components
Loss of wildlife habitats
Endangerment of wild species

Climate Change
The climate and biodiversity crises are closely linked.
- Disruption of species distribution
- Biological invasion and species extinction
BIODIVERSITY CRISIS
CLIMATE CRISIS
- Decrease in atmospheric carbon storage capacity through photosynthesis
- Reduced air cooling capacity

Invasive Species
Construction
Construction sites are conducive to the introduction of invasive alien species, which have a high reproductive capacity.
ConsEquences
- Destruction of ecosystems
- Soil disturbance
- Introduction of external materials or machinery
Disappearance of native species
Health implications
Confort
The urban environment is home to a large number of exotic species, introduced either deliberately or accidentally by human activity.

Light pollution
Buildings are a source of light pollution, particularly from artificial light at night. This attracts certain species (insects) and increases mortality by causing them to become exhausted or making them more vulnerable to predation. Other species (bats, rodents, etc.) are repelled by night-time light, which hinders their migration, foraging and reproduction. It also affects the rhythm or behaviour of certain species (prolonging the growth period of plants, birdsong).

Pesticides and herbicides
Their use affects ecosystems (air, water and soil quality) and biodiversity, in particular by reducing plant diversity and the abundance of pollinating insects.
