IN PORTUGAL
It is precisely in Portugal that azulejos are used to decorate all kinds of homes, even covering entire buildings. The term ‘azulejo’ derives from Arabic and means ‘polished stone’. Furthermore, they were not always square in shape, but were smooth glazed clay slabs cut with pliers called alicates, which explains the origin of the name from which the term azulejos derives, namely alicatados. In fact, azulejos are the successors of Spanish alicatados, brought to the Iberian Peninsula by the Arabs.
