Goal
Band
During my junior year of high school, my interest of playing the guitar was at it's highest. I really got into the idea of starting a band with a few of my classmates. Learning how to communicate with the band members helped me figure out how to communicate ideas in my writing. My band did a lot of covers of songs and with that I picked most of them. Which I had to explain the theme and meanings behind each and every song.
My Personal Essay
As my last year of highschool was coming to an end, it made me question a lot about my identity and personal flaws. My English teacher had assigned an essay about exploring the depth of personal issues. Writing my essay helped me overcome personal issues that I was holding within. It helped me connect ideas of different perspectives. Not only did it help me dig deeper into myself but also improved my literacy skills. I saw my Spanish literacy come back into my life and I was fluent again. I realized now that despite having English around me constantly doesn't mean I should lose another part of my literacy.
My life
When I was growing up I didn't enjoy to read. English was a new language to me and wasn't a priority because at home I'd speak Spanish. Nonetheless it was imperative that I learn English but I hated the thought of putting aside my time to read or write something. Because of this I really struggled with writing to me at the time it wasn't worth doing, It wasn't worth my time. So it wasn't a surprise when I was put in a ESL Class.
At this time I was met with the second instrument that I'd learn. I was in middle school band class struggling to pick up the baritone in my hands. Not mention how hard it was to play. I realized that performing music and writing are very similar. Writing is just a performance on paper and with that I started exploring and writing comics. I felt writing comics was a way I could explore and hone my writing skill just like I explored with the baritone. This was also the point where my oral English literacy skills improved greatly. I made minimal errors and I'd consider myself practically fluent. English was something I used everyday but of course with that came my decreasing oral Spanish literacy. I would have trouble forming simple sentences and only being able to understand Spanish fluently. I felt as if a part of me was lost, I spoke Spanish less and relied on English more.
Connection of Writing
My local church was spanish speaking so I continued to struggle switching my oral literacy from school to church. I was overwhelmed at times because I was surrounded by a new language constantly, while still trying to maintain my first language. What helped a lot was my siblings they seemed to have everything figured out. So like a lot of other younger siblings, I looked up to my older brother and he was a big influence in my passion for music. He played the drums at church. So I learned the drums just like him, and at this point, I was playing in my church. I had no idea that this was going to spark something that would stay in my life forever. It was my first time writing sheet music and I was able to express something I wrote without using words.
Passion for Music
Development
As my English developed I kept reading increasingly difficult books. At the same time I developed as a musician. Of course at the beginning I didn't have skill in either category but through discipline and craft I was able to Improve in both. My favorite genre of books was non-fiction and fantasy. These books helped me gained creativity and imagination. Both of these skills helped me explore some passions of mine in addition to music. I also began to redeveloped my Spanish literacy, I took spanish classes at my high school. It helped redevelope the language I left behind. Relearning what I had forgotten made me feel closer to my culture and my self.
Guitar
At the beginning of my sophomore year, my father bought a guitar. He used the guitar to practice during down-time but he was a busy man. While it collected dust in the upstairs living room. I found myself gaining an interest in playing. It was the most difficult and intricate of the instrument's I've had to play. Not to mention the many different styles of playing guitar. Playing the guitar helped me code switch between styles of playing but also in my writing.
In perspective
Looking back I realize that reading and writing were never things I hated. They were things I didn’t understand yet, and music was the first thing that helped me make sense of all of it. Music taught me rhythm and discipline and how to express myself without needing perfect words. Every instrument I learned added something to the way I communicated.. As my English got stronger, my Spanish oral literacy faded, and for a while it felt like I was losing a part of myself. But music stayed with me through all of that. It reminded me that expression can change forms without disappearing. When I finally relearned Spanish in high school, it felt like reconnecting a voice I thought I had lost. Writing grew from that same place. It became something I could shape with rhythm and intention, just like music. Today I’m grateful for every struggle because they helped me find a voice I didn’t know I had, in both languages and in every instrument I’ve learned.
Goal
My goal at the end of this course to become a better and more creative in writing. I've struggled in the past before to think out of the box when writing. But hopefully by the end of this course I'll be better. So to finish off the semester I'd like to have an A in the class.
