The First Fleet

The eleven ships which transported soldiers, convicts and settlers from Britain to Australia were called The First Fleet. It arrived in 1788, led by Sir Arthus Phillip. He established the first British colony in Sydney Cove. Aboriginal people were already living in Australia. The arrival of the British changed their lives forever.

The Stolen Generation

The Stolen Generation

In the past, many Aboriginal children were taken from their families. They were sent to institutions or white families. They were not allowed to speak their language or see their parents. Rabbit-Proof Fence tells the story of three Aboriginal girls who escaped and walked a long way to go back home. Today, this period is called the Stolen Generations. Speaking about the fate of the Aboriginal people since the arrival of the British settlers, we can't help drawing a parallel with the destiny of the Indians in North America when Europeans immigrated to the wild west to look for lands. When Aboriginal children were sent to institutions, Indians were sent to reservations.
