WHY IS IT?
By Valerie Bloom
Why is it that the taps all drip,
The electricity wires trip,
Tired pipes in the attic grumble,
Empty washer-dryers tumble,
Floorboards creak and old joints moan,
Doorposts squeak and rafters groan,
Fridges softly hum and sigh,
Cats out in the garden cry
Like a band of mad banshees,
The wind howls eerily in the trees,
The telephone rings, there’s no one there,
There are soft whispers in the air,
The moon starts playing hide and seek,
Your head feels light, you knees feel weak,
You think you’re not alone in bed,
And wish you were elsewhere instead,
When you’re alone at night?

Reveal Explainer
The poet uses a range of normal, everyday sounds to create a spooky atmosphere. During daytime, a dripping tap might go unnoticed. However, at night, when a house is quiet and it is dark, suddenly small noises seem much louder and more noticeable. As a result, an ordinary sound can seem creepy or strange.
