Easter

Easter has a Christian background and celebrates the resurrection of Jesus. It's a spring holiday during April. In Czechia we mainly celebrate Easter Monday. The most known tradition is whipping women with an easter whip - "Pomlázka". Men go from house to house and sing rhymes, asking women to give them decorated eggs. If the woman has none, she'll get (gently) whipped. Tradition says that women should be whipped in order to maintain their health beauty the following year. Men can also choose to splash water on women instead of whipping them.

St. Nicolas Day

On December 5th, people walk the streets dressed as St. Nicolas, the devil and the angel. They go from house to house and find out if the children have been good or bad, and depending on that, they give them either sweets or coal. Then, before going to bed, children hang a large stocking on a doorknob or a window, and in the morning they find sweets or coal inside.

Christmas

On 24th of December we celebrate Christmas Eve. Families cook Christmas dinner (fried carp and potato salad is traditional), decorate Christmas tree and after dinner we open the presents that Baby Jesus brought us.

Christmas is a holiday of peace when you spend time with your family and enjoy the festive spirit.

Czech Christmas traditions

Baking Christmas cookies. People spend time together baking and enjoy eating them later as well.

We pour melted lead into cold water. The shape it forms can have a meaning, from it we can try to guess our future.

Cutting apples to see if there is a star inside. This is a sign of luck.

Wedding traditions

It shows they will work together as a team after marriage. 3rd tradition is "Eating wedding soup with one spoon":The couple eats soup together and usually they use only one spoon. The bride feeds the groom and vice versa. It shows cooperation and sharing.4th tradition is "Carrying the bride over the threshold":The groom carries the bride into their home. It protects the bride from bad spirits.

Folk costumes and village festival

Usually in summer in South Moravia we celebrate feast. We put on our traditional folk costumes and then we dance our traditional dances, for example verbuňk, which is especially for men. There´s a lot of food like frgál (cake) and sweets, drinks and for kids there are fairground rides. You can also buy some toys. Our folk costumes vary a lot, their style depends on the region.

Here are some of our folk costumes and photos from feast. Mostly there are three colours: red, blue and white. Hope you like them:)

In the Czech Republic, we celebrate name days. Each day in the calendar is connected to one or more names. If your name is on that day, it is your name day.

People usally wish "Happy name day", give small gifts, flowers, or send a message. It is not as imortant as birthday, but many people celebrate it.
