House of Izieu
The house of Izieu was a refuge for Jewish childrens in the World War 2. The children were hidden in this house
This house was spposed to be safe because at that time, the village was located in an area occupied by the Italians. On 11 November 1942, in response to the Allies landing in North Africa, the German army invaded . As for the Italians, they occupied the eight departments on the left bank of the Rhône, from Haute-Savoie to Corsica. In this area, the Italian authorities were compassionate towards Jews. It then becomes an area of refuge for many of them.
The children
The childrens lives in Izieu because it was a jewish, they took refugee in secret . In this house the childrens was in security, it is a safe place because the territory was controled by the Italian
The daily life at the house of Izieu was they collect vegetable in the garden and they had a educatioon with a teacher for learnt french. They played with other children on the house the evening he slept peacefuly on dormitory
The children’s went to Izieu for don’t be arrested by the Nazi and for don’t was deported in death camp
On House of Izieu There was 44 childrens lived in april 1944
April 6th, 1944
On the morning of 6 April 1944, members of the Lyon Gestapo who had been tipped off by an informant carried out a raid on the children's home in Izieu and arrested everyone there. 44 children aged 4-17, and seven staff members who had been taking care of them, were incarcerated in the prison in Lyon, and were deported to Drancy the following day.
The deportation order was issued by Klaus Barbie, head of the Gestapo in Lyon. Barbie reported the arrest of the children and adults at the children's home in a telegram that he sent to Paris.
George Halpern
George Halpern born in 30 october 1935 in Vienne(Autriche).Goerge Halpernl lived in first on the house of O.S.E in Mainsat (Creuse) at the castel of Chaumont. Then in the house in Lodève After the dissolution of the house, he went to Izieu in 1943 He was deported at the prison of Montluc in Lyon, then he was deported in the convoy 71 at Auschwitz-Birkenau and he died in the gas chambers For us, George Halpern was a kind child trying to escape the war and Jewish persecution.
After the War and memory
In 1983, he was arrested and extradited to France, where he was convicted of crimes against humanity and sentenced to life in prison. Although he had been sentenced to death in absentia twice earlier, in 1947 and 1954, capital punishment had been abolished in France in 1981. Barbie died of cancer in 1991, at age 77, in his Lyon prison cell.
The Maison d'Izieu is both a place of remembrance and a museum where you will find many accessible contents on history, justice and the construction of the remembrance of Izieu.
