Scout and Jem begin to suffer teasing and insults because of their father's case. One day Mrs. Dubose insults Jem and he decides to take revenge by destroying her garden. As punishment for this, Atticus forces Jem to read to Mrs. Dubose every day.
Miss Maudie's house burns down, and Atticus tells Jem and Scout to get outside. Then someone mysteriously puts a blanket over Scout.
Jem and Scout find out that Atticus has agreed to defend Tom Robinson, a black man who has been accused of rape.
