Bloomsday

Bloomsday celebrates the Irish writer James Joyce and his famous novel Ulysses. The entire story of the book takes place on June 16, 1904, following the character Leopold Bloom through Dublin. People dress in Edwardian clothes (the style of 1904). Fans walk around Dublin following the same routes as the characters in the novel. Bloomsday is a mix of literature, history, and fun, and it shows the importance of Joyce in Irish culture.
Many people attend Midnight Mass on December 24th Children leave cookies and Guinness (or milk!) for Santa. On Christmas day people have big family meal with roast turkey, ham, potatoes, and vegetables. Children open Christmas crackers (paper tubes that make a pop sound) at the table
People believed that during Samhain, the world of the living and the world of the spirits were closer. To protect themselves, they lit bonfires and wore costumes or masks to scare away evil spirits. Families left food outside their houses to please good spirits and ancestors. This celebration was spread to other countries thanks to Irish inmigration.
