Art

Françoise Gilot

Aaron Wiesenfeld

The visual inspiration for The Crossing comes from painter Aron Wiesenfeld, whose dreamlike worlds capture the quiet space between movement and stillness. His solitary figures, often standing at thresholds or caught in fading light, echo the mood of the season — reflective, mysterious, and beautifully human.

Françoise Gilot was a French painter, writer, and fiercely independent creative force who refused to be reduced to someone else’s muse. Though she had a decade-long relationship with Pablo Picasso and bore two of his children, she ultimately left him. An act of defiance few in his orbit ever made.

Rather than be absorbed into his legend, Gilot built her own expansive career, developing a bold visual language shaped by color, movement, and psychological depth. When she published Life with Picasso, she reclaimed her narrative on her own terms, despite legal threats and industry pressure.

Gilot lived to 101, creating art almost until the end. A testament to endurance, autonomy, and the quiet power of women to create until the end.

She was a painter who refused to live in anyone else’s shadow. Though often remembered for her relationship with Picasso, she built an inspirational career on her own terms and continued creating bold, vibrant work for decades. Her art carries the same spirit as the wines in this box. Independent, expressive, and shaped by women who chose their own path. Pairing Gilot’s work with our wines for this quarter is a reminder that women have always been creating, cultivating, and shaping culture in every corner of the world. In the vineyard, in the cellar, in the studio, and in the communities around them.

Terah Wine Co.

Sonoma, California

About the Winemaker

Terah Bajjalieh is the founder and winemaker behind Terah Wine Co., a California project rooted in minimal intervention farming and an expressive, place-driven approach to wine. Her path into winemaking began not in a laboratory but in the vineyards, where she developed a deep respect for the relationship between land, climate, and the people who farm it. Before launching her own label, Bajjalieh spent years working alongside respected producers across California and abroad, learning both traditional cellar work and the philosophy of low-intervention winemaking that would later define her own wines. In 2020, she founded Terah Wine Co., with a focus on organically farmed fruit from historic vineyards across Northern California. Bajjalieh works with varieties like Chenin Blanc, Zinfandel, and Cabernet Sauvignon, crafting wines that prioritize balance, texture, and transparency over manipulation. Fermentations are typically carried out with native yeasts, and the wines are made with minimal additions, allowing each vineyard and vintage to speak for itself. Bajjalieh’s work reflects a new generation of California winemakers who are reclaiming heritage vineyards while pushing the region toward more sustainable and thoughtful practices. Through Terah Wine Co., she continues to produce wines that are vibrant, honest, and deeply connected to the landscapes that shape them.

LalaLá

Mendoza, Argentina

About the Winemaker

Laura Ciacera is the founder of LaLaLa Wines, an Argentine project dedicated to producing vibrant, certified organic wines that celebrate the agricultural traditions of Mendoza. Ciacera grew up immersed in the wine world—her mother from San Juan and her father from Mendoza both owned a winery—giving her an early foundation in vineyard work and wine production. For more than a decade she helped develop product lines and marketing strategies within the family business, gaining deep insight into both the winemaking process and the global wine market before eventually setting out to create her own label. In 2016, Ciacera left the family winery to launch LaLaLa Wines, focusing on certified organic wines sourced from vineyards in Mendoza’s Agrelo, Valle de Uco, and Ugarteche regions. The project combines traditional vineyard practices with a modern, quality-driven approach, working with varieties such as Malbec, Criolla, Tempranillo, and Chenin Blanc. Grapes are hand harvested and carefully selected before fermentation, allowing the wines to highlight both the freshness of the fruit and the character of the high-altitude terroir. Through LaLaLa Wines, Ciacera represents a new generation of Argentine producers who are redefining the country’s wine identity—balancing heritage, sustainability, and a commitment to crafting expressive wines that reflect the landscapes and traditions of Mendoza.

Emme Wines

Sonoma, California

About the Winemaker

Rosalind Reynolds is the founder and winemaker behind Emme Wines, a Northern California project dedicated to reviving heritage California varieties through thoughtful, minimal-intervention winemaking. A Pennsylvania native, Reynolds originally studied plant genetics and biology with plans to pursue medical school. Her path shifted after taking an internship in a research lab at Gallo in Modesto, where she quickly became captivated by the world of wine. She spent the next several years “harvest hopping,” working vintages across multiple wine regions and gaining hands-on experience before settling in Sonoma County. In 2018, Reynolds launched Emme Wines, named in honor of her grandmother. She works from the Pax Wines facility in Sebastopol, where she also serves as assistant winemaker for Pax Mahle while producing her own small-lot wines alongside a collaborative community of young California winemakers. Her project focuses on what she describes as “old-school California,” working with historically significant varieties such as Carignan, Colombard, Zinfandel, Merlot, and lesser-known grapes like Abouriou and Muscat Vert. Reynolds sources fruit from sustainably and organically farmed vineyards across Northern California, including Ricetti Vineyard in Mendocino, Nakai Vineyard in Sonoma, and Shake Ridge Ranch in Amador County. These relationships with growers are central to her work; she seeks vineyard partners who care as deeply about farming the land as she does about making the wine. In the cellar her approach is intentionally minimal, relying on native yeast fermentations, gentle techniques such as foot treading and whole-cluster fermentation, and little to no additions. Wines are unfined, unfiltered, and made to highlight both the character of the vineyard and the long agricultural history of California’s forgotten grape varieties.

Tessier Winery

Berkley, California

About the Winemaker

Kristie Tacey is the founder and winemaker behind Tessier Winery, a Berkeley-based project focused on small-lot, minimally intervened wines sourced from organically farmed vineyards across California. A Michigan native, Tacey began her career not in wine but in science. She studied microbiology and spent nearly a decade working as a research scientist in biotechnology, including time contributing to the Human Genome Project before ultimately deciding to pursue winemaking full time. Tacey transitioned into the wine industry through hands-on cellar work and vineyard experience, eventually serving as operations manager and assistant winemaker at an East Bay winery before founding Tessier Winery in 2009. Her scientific background continues to shape her philosophy in the cellar, where she approaches winemaking as a balance of art, biology, and careful observation. Today Tessier produces small-batch wines made from fruit sourced from sustainably and organically farmed vineyards throughout California, including sites in the Santa Cruz Mountains, Anderson Valley, Arroyo Seco, and El Dorado. Fermentations rely on native yeast and minimal intervention, with wines typically unfined and unfiltered to allow each vineyard to express its character. Tacey’s work reflects a deep respect for the growers she partners with and a belief that wine should transparently capture the story of the land, the vintage, and the people who farm it.

Domaine de Bois MOZÉ

Anjou, France

About the Winemaker

Mathilde Giraudet is the winemaker and steward of Domaine Bois Mozé, a historic estate in the Anjou region of France’s Loire Valley. Located in the village of Coutures between Angers and Saumur, the 38-hectare domaine sits on clay-limestone hillsides that give the wines both freshness and structure. Giraudet took the helm of the estate in 2004 and has since reshaped the property with a strong commitment to responsible farming, placing nature and biodiversity at the center of the vineyard’s future. Under her leadership the estate transitioned toward more sustainable practices, earning organic certification in 2017. Vineyard work now incorporates biodiversity initiatives such as replanting hedgerows, installing bird boxes, and using eco-grazing in winter to maintain soil health and ecological balance. The wines of Bois Mozé reflect the diversity of Anjou, with a range that includes Chenin Blanc, Cabernet Franc, rosé wines, Crémant de Loire, and Coteaux de l’Aubance. Alongside these traditional appellations, Giraudet also experiments with more unconventional cuvées—sulfite-free wines, orange wines, and single-variety expressions such as 100% Grolleau. Through Domaine Bois Mozé, Giraudet continues to balance tradition with innovation, crafting wines that honor the agricultural history of Anjou while exploring new expressions of Loire Valley terroir.
