Sound Design 101

On MiniFreak

Why are synths amazing?

The magic of a synthesizer is that it turns you from a listener into a creator. Instead of just picking a sound from a list, you are building it from the ground up. It opens the way for total creative control, where you can design your own sounds and discover unexpected results along the way

Enter the Matrix

Challenge #3

Let's tell our LFO to attack the cutoff.

Now, every time the LFO(criminal) moves, the cutoff (victim) rattles in fear.

Let's make a dynamic pad

Challenge #3

Make a sound like this:

Hint: use the pitch 1+2 destination.

Granular

Think of it as shredding a sound into tiny grains and then scattering them like sand.

Great to transform existing sounds into complex textures.

Q&A

Explore sounds, and feel free to ask questions !

Thank You !

Turn the matrix knob and place the light on the envelope column Press the matrix knob Turn it to set the amount Press again to confirm

Cutoff

This is your window switch

Windows Down (Open): You hear the full, bright, "buzzy" roar of the engine.Windows Up (Closed): The sound becomes muffled, warm, and dark. You lose the "hiss" but keep the "thump."

LFO

Think of this as an automatic hand that wobbles a knob back and forth for you.

Instead of you moving the steering wheel or the gas pedal yourself, the LFO does it !

Envelopes

The gas pedal

Even with the engine running, the car only moves when you give it instructions. The Envelope controls the shape of the sound over time. This is what moves the sound. Without an envelope, your synth would just be a constant, never-ending drone. This gives the sound its "shape" and rhythm.

Turn the matrix knob and place the light on the cutoff column Press the matrix knob Turn it to set an amount Press again to confirm

Add distortion

Oscillators

The engine of a car.

Just as an engine creates a constant mechanical vibration to power the vehicle, an oscillator creates a constant electronic vibration to power the sound. This is what generates the sound

Turn the matrix knob and place the light on the cutoff column Press the matrix knob Turn it to set an amount Press again to confirm

Use the matrix knob to link your criminals (sources) to their victims (destinations).

Press the knob to select, and dial-in an amount.

The Amount: This is the severity of the crime. Is it just a minor nudge (a subtle wobble), or is the criminal completely taking over the victim’s life (extreme sound changes)?

Filters

Rolling the Windows Up and down

Now that the car is moving, the Filter decides how much of that raw engine noise you actually hear.

Modulation Matrix

The red string on a detective’s corkboard.

This is where you decide who is attacking whom within your sound.
