Different is Good

Nikita

My teachers used to say that ‘the world would be a very boring place if we were all the same’. That’s true and the world needs difference. The world needs people from different ethnicities and different backgrounds, whether that’s at school, in youth clubs, in team sports, or, as you get older, in workplaces and companies. There are lots of studies that show the benefits of diversity. For example, company workplaces, inclusive ones – with a mixture of people from different backgrounds, races, genders and sexualities – have been shown to come up with better ideas and perform better overall. This is because each person can offer fresh perspectives gained from their different experiences and bring their own ideas, skills and strengths to the long, shiny boardroom table. That melting pot of difference is what creates brilliance. If we had a magic wand, all three of us would want to create an equal world where everyone has the same access to opportunities and resources, and where we are all treated the same.

At the moment, there’s not enough diversity in the top levels of women’s football. One reason for this is that people of colour don’t always have the same access to the opportunities that can help them get on the ladder in the first place. Part of our purpose is to create equal access for everyone who might want to play football. For example, most of the coaching centres and clubs that are part of the pathway towards becoming a Lioness tend to be in areas in the suburbs, which are not easy to get to if you live in inner-city areas. But many people of colour and families from disadvantaged backgrounds live in inner-city areas, which means these children can’t get to these clubs! If they don’t have a parent or family member who can drive them there and back, they need to travel by public transport on their own (often in the evenings, after dark). But this could be dangerous and lots of parents don’t want their children doing this. So most young people from cities aren’t given an equal chance of playing at an elite level. This is why so many teams end up with players who are often white and all from similar, more privileged backgrounds. We need to remove barriers like this if we want football to be for everyone! For example, we need more academies to be built in inner-city areas. And we need more local council funding for safe transport, such as mini-buses, to take children to and from elite training facilities. This would make professional football a more accessible pathway for everyone, and should improve the chances of people from all backgrounds being represented in top league teams.

A) What are the benefits of diversity in a team such as football team?

Reveal Explainer

One benefit is that inclusive, diverse workplaces, made up of different kinds of people, come up with better ideas. This would be the same for a football team - better ideas from a range of different people.
