Taking Aim at What Matters Most

Ella

All eyes were on the ball, waiting to see if it would cross the line and hit the back of the net. It felt like forever before it actually did, like time was in slow motion, from when it left my boot until it went over German goalkeeper Merle Frohms’s head. I’d never felt it before: a feeling of urgency where all I could think was, ‘Why is it taking so long?!’ Finally, when everyone started screaming, I knew it was real. The ball had actually gone in. I’d just scored a goal at Wembley in the European Cup final! That’s when the whole stadium of over 87,000 fans erupted! It was literally the best feeling of my life! I’ve got footage of that goal saved on my phone and I watch it sometimes before bed, just to relive it. It was such a pinch-me moment, one that will stay with me forever. It was a tense match, which ended up going to extra time when Germany scored an equalizer. But Chloe Kelly scored in the 110th minute, and, when the final whistle blew, I ran towards Alessia Russo and jumped into her arms, tears streaming down my face. We’d done it! We’d just won the Euros!

The Queen even sent a statement to us, saying: ‘ Your success goes far beyond the trophy you have so deservedly earned. You have all set an example that will be an inspiration for girls and women today, and for future generations.’ The 2022 Women’s Euros was record-breaking in loads of ways.

  • It had the highest attendance of any Euros final, with 87,192 people coming along to watch us. (Before that, the record crowd attendance was 79,115 for the men’s Euros final of Spain vs Soviet Union back in 1964!)
  • Our amazing coach, Sarina Wiegman, was the first coach to win the European Championships with two different nations (England in 2022 and Netherlands in 2017).
  • The Lionesses broke Germany’s goal-scoring record, by scoring twenty-two across the tournament.
Did you know that seven of those twenty-two goals were scored by substitutes? When subs came off the bench we had one clear purpose – to have an impact on the game and make a difference. And that’s exactly what we did!
