Les Proteaceae apparaissent au Crétacé, à l’époque où le supercontinent Gondwana commence à se fragmenter.Deux grands centres d’évolution émergent :Afrique australe : berceau des Protea, Leucadendron, Leucospermum, Paranomus, Diastella, etc.Australie : diversification des Banksia, Grevillea, Hakea, Telopea, Dryandra…La séparation des masses continentales a favorisé une spéciation allopatrique spectaculaire, expliquant la richesse actuelle de la famille.
