-British Guiana was a British colony located on the northern coast of South America. Sir Walter Raleigh, an English explorer, and his crew discovered the colony in 1573. -The Dutch settled there at the beginning of the 17th century. -At the beginnig there were 4 colonies Essequibo, Démérara, Pomeroon and Berbice -in 1796 the British army conquerd the 4 colonies - in 1814 the Dutch sold the 4 Colonies to the UK and consolidated it into a single colony - in 1831 the British consolidated the territories into a single colony. -Guyana became independent from the United Kingdom on the May 26th of 1966 .

-In 1823, a big slave revolt begun in the colony of Démérara. There was 12 000 captive people and it was severely repressed by the british troups. -The economy of British Guiana was completely based on sugarcane -Until the abolition of slavery in the British Empire, sugar planters depended almost exclusively on slave labour to produce sugar. -Then Slavery was abolished in 1833 - In 1838, the free-slaves leave sugar plantations, despite the restrictions which aimed to avoid these departures. -after the venezueliane crise, the british colony get the guyana esquiba territory back -April 1953: during the elections, a majority of people voted for the progressive people's party

in 1963, the progressiste governement from the minister Cheddi Jagani resisted to a coup, who leaves 170 dead people. The teritory became independant in may 26th 1966. In 1970, it took the name of cooperative republic of Guyana
