When we talk about sea, we all think about fish, giant sea animals, or else miniature sea animals. But we often forgot the algae. Indeed it is the majority plants in ocean, but we don’t know very well them.We can also ask ourself how they lives and what they bring to ocean.To answer these question, we’ll first observe their way to live, how they eat or how they grow, and then we will see what are their contribution to the ocean.

Seaweed and silicon

In this video, you are going to discover how silicon is present in our everyday life and how it plays an important role in marine ecosystems. We will explain how silicon travels from the land to the ocean and how microorganisms, such as microalgae and diatoms, use it to grow and survive.This video is part of a project carried out by us, students in the European specialty, in collaboration with students from the IUEM of Brest, who created this video. Together, we worked to understand and explain the importance of silicon in the ocean and its impact on coastal biodiversity.

We recently had the opportunity to meet two master’s students form the IUEM who introduced us to a video . The video talked about the importance of algae in global warming and how these algae migrate because of rising temperatures.

Sulfur and DMS

As members of the Euro group, we had the opportunity to carry out a project with the IUEM students. Two of them presented the article they are studying, to our group, entitled "Emissions of biogenic sulfur compouds and their regulation by nutrients during an Ulva prolifera bloom in the Yellow Sea". This article deals with the proliferation of algae.To help us understand the article, the students created an introductory video for us. The video deals with the molecules produced by green algae. It highlights how they work. We can also see what their real impact is on the marine ecosystem during a proliferation.

This video was made by two IUEM students to explain an article about how algae can help reduce the amount of heavy metals in the ocean. This video also exposes how heavy metals end up in the oceans, in addition to showing the dangers of using algae that has absorbed some heavy metals.

Green tides in brittany

This year, we were lucky to meet two students from IUEM. They had studied an article about the green tide. To make us understand it, they have realised a video. In this video, they talk about the green tide, especially in Brittany, and the different factors that impact this phenomenon.

Green and golden tides

This video will help you understand more about how seaweed tides have consequences on the environment and what are the main factors of these. The video will explain the different stages of the seaweed tides ,where they are located and what could happen if there is too much. This phenomenon affects more places and people than one might think, and this video clearly explains what causes it, the processus and its consequences.

This presentation results from a collaborative project between Master's degree students from the IUEM (Institut Universitaire Européen de la Mer), studying chemistry of the marine environment and high school students, from Lycée La Pérouse Kerichen, studying Biology in English as part of the European Section. The oldest ones had to explain to their younger partners what they learned from scientific articles about Diatoms and the Silica cycle, in a simplified way.
