Extrait des Cahiers d'Esther : histoire de mes 12 ans de Riad Sattouf Esther ne cesse d'affirmer sa haine des garçons et cherche à s'approcher des stéréotypes féminins. L'identité sexuelle est le fait de se sentir homme ou femme, et de se reconnaître et d'être reconnu comme tel dans la société. Elle est le résultat d'une construction dans laquelle interviennent des facteurs biologiques (sexe génétique et phénotypique), psychologiques et sociaux. La construction de cette identité est personnelle et peut évoluer au cours de la vie.

Les Khasi sont un peuple de 3 millions d'habitants, en Inde, où les femmes sont les cheffes de famille. Les enfants nés dans une famille Khasi prennent le nom de leur mère et la benjamine hérite de l'ensemble des biens de ses parents. Ce sont les femmes qui assurent les besoins financiers du foyer pendant que les hommes s'occupent des enfants.
Le sexe social renvoie aux rôles et aux comportements qu'une société considère comme caractéristiques des hommes ou des femmes. Cette socialisation par rapport au sexe des enfants mène à la formation de stéréotypes sur ce que doit être une femme et ce que doit être un homme.
