The Commonwealth is one of the world’s oldest political associations of states. Its roots go back to the British Empire, when countries around the world were ruled by Britain. The Commonwealth is a voluntary association of independent and equal countries. These countries have agreed to shared goals like development, democracy and peace. Their values and principles are expressed in the Commonwealth Charter. Today any country can join the modern Commonwealth. The last two countries to join the Commonwealth were Gabon and Togo in 2022.
