Health & Wellbeing

The excitement of Christmas seems a distant memory and we are now seeing the days getting progressively longer. Here are some tips and a video on how to give your wellbeing a boost in the winter months.

Why should we buy seasonal produce? Eating seasonal food contains the 'goodness' such as nutrients that our bodies need at different times of the year. Let's also remember that it is better for the environment, buying local, seasonal food rather than produce which has been transported from other countries positively impacts carbon emissions. Click the link to find 8 reasons to buy in season plus a useful guide on what is in season in spring, summer, autumn and winter.

Sustainability

Let’s talk about plastic. It’s everywhere from bottles, packaging, home goods such as furniture but also in the not so obvious items such as clothes, cosmetics, tea bags and chewing gum.It is a versatile product however it is harming the environment. Find out more by clicking the link below.

There are ways in which we can reduce plastic usage:1. Buy milk in glass bottles from a milkman - use the link to find a milkman near you! 2. Use a bar of soap rather than liquid soap from a plastic bottle. 3. Use a reusable metal water bottle. 4. Buy local from a butcher and greengrocer, reducing the need for plastic packaging – take containers and bags for transporting your shopping.

Digital Literacy

Why it is not good? Screen time has a significant impact on sleep. The blue light emitted by screens can disrupt our sleep patterns, making it harder to fall asleep and stay asleep. This can lead to insomnia, fatigue and irritability. We can make changes in and out of work to reduce the impacts: 1. 20:20:20 rule – every 20 minutes, look about 20 feet away from your screen for 20 seconds. 2. Set realistic targets – start by reducing your screen time by 30 minutes daily. 3. Build new habits – replace screen time with alternatives such as reading or exercising. 4. Turn off notifications – reduce distractions by disabling unnecessary app notifications

Do you suffer from digital screen time?Watch the video on how to reduce this

Welsh Art

There is an interesting exhibition coming up at The National Museum in Cardiff. Take a look by clicking on the link below

Gwendolen Mary John (1876 - 1939) was a Welsh artist who worked in France for most of her career. Her paintings are mainly portriats of anonymous females. From the mid 1910s her painting technique changed significantly, applying paint sparingly with no varnishes. The brush strokes became more visible, with compostions being flatter and less smooth

Cross Pollination - a gardening tip...or a Management practice?

Click here to find how to apply cross-pollination

This fits with transformational leadership which is a style that encourages team members to be curious, experiment and learn across boundaries. Why is it worth considering? It strengthens innovation, adaptability and a sharing of knowledge.

Respect - Gratitude

Gratitude is a professional skill which builds respect and stronger working relationships. Click on the text to find out more.

Watch the video for further tips on how to show gratitude.

Ways to show gratitude at work: Be specific about what you are saying 'thanks' for as it demonstrates that you have 'noticed' the person's efforts. Acknowledge unseen work i.e. behind the scenes contributions. Express gratitude promptly.

Here is the link for the February Respect calendar.

How Gratitude Strengthens Relationships at Work
  • Builds psychological safety - feeling valued akes you more willing to share ideas, admit mistakes, and collaborate openly.
  • Reduces friction and conflict - gratitude softens edges. It creates goodwill that makes disagreements easier to navigate without damaging relationships.
  • Improves communication quality - gratitude encourages more thoughtful, respectful exchanges.
  • Supports leadership credibility - leaders who express gratitude authentically are perceived as fair, attentive, and respectful — qualities that inspire followership.

How can I apply cross pollination as a manager?

Interdepartmental collaboration – create ongoing opportunities for teams to share knowledge, challenges and insights. This breaks down silos and sparks new thinking. Short-term shadowing – allow employees to spend time in other departments to understand other perspectives and workflows. Invite guest speakers – allows for learning and increasing skills such as problem solving. Encourage diverse learning – by encouraging team members to learn something outside of their discipline. Cross-functional project teams – form mixed-skill groups to tackle strategic initiatives which ensures a blend of perspectives.

Wales is 2nd best nation at recycling

To continue with the adoption of circular economy the future Deposit Return Scheme will improve the reuse of glass bottles hence reducing the impact of manufacturing new bottles and less going to landfill. When purchasing drinks in glass bottles, the total cost will include a deposit. This is paid back to you once the bottle is returned back to a designated collection point. This scheme has been working in Germany for many years and is successful. When we talk about circular economy it means keeping the product in use or recycle for as long as possible.
