There was the statue of an elephant in Paris before the Eiffel tower.
Before the Eiffel tower, Paris had the Elephant from 1813-1846. It was 78 feet tall, and made of plaster. Napoleon ordered it made in 1811 and intended it to be made of bronze with visitors ascending a leg of the elephant to the observation deck on the back. The plaster elephant peeled and flaked and became infested by rats over the years. It was demolished in 1846.

A Polish soldier was actually a bear !
Wojtek the Bear was a Syrian brown bear adopted by soldiers in the Polish army during World War II. The bear, who was initially given the rank of private, eventually rose to the rank of corporal and served as a morale booster for the soldiers. They fed him condensed milk from an empty vodka bottle, honey, fruit, and marmalade. The bear, whom they named Wojtek (short for Wojciech; Polish: “joyful warrior”), came to trust his human companions.
