Pi's challengesThe importance of water

I need help

January 2026

This month we will explore the importance of water in Tiny seed's development. Pi challenges us to practice our mathematic skills by creating a water lab, playing online games, create a water map for tiny Seed and finally create a digital story about his and Tiny Seed's adventures.

Don't forget to take photos of the activities and upload them on our Padlet that you will find in Twinspace.

1. Create a water lab

How much water does Tiny Seed need?

  • Prepare 3 clear cups with cotton and one seed in each.
  • Label them: “Little water”, “Enough water”, “Too much water”.
  • Every day use a pipette to add: Cup 1: 1 pipette (little) Cup 2: 3 pipettes (enough) Cup 3: 5 pipettes / very wet (too much).
  • Observe daily: Has the root or leaf appeared? Which seed is taller/shorter? Discuss using words: little – enough – too much, more – less.
  • At the end decide in which cup Tiny Seed grew best and why.
  • Finally, children draw one picture for each cup to show the result. You can use the worksheet at the end of this presentation.

2. Play Mathematical online games

Each game focuses on a different mathematical idea: time sequence, ordering and categorisation.Through these three games, children practice mathematical language and reasoning in a playful, interactive way, while Pi guides them to think like young mathematicians.

3. Create a digital story with the adventures of Pi and Tiny Seed

Let us create a collaborative story with our students, highlighting the importance of water for the growth of the seed and how Pi helps us think about how much water Tiny Seed really needs (little, enough, too much). Have a short discussion about the main points of the plot: the Tiny Seed is dry, it is looking for water, Pi helps the children find the right amount of water, and in the end the Tiny Seed grows. Then, the children create photos using digital tools or make drawings related to the story they have imagined (for example: three cups with little / enough / too much water, Pi comparing them, Tiny Seed growing best with the “right” amount). The students dictate simple sentences, which the teacher types (e.g. “Pi helps us give Tiny Seed the right amount of water.”, “This cup has too much water, this one has enough.”). Each school creates one page, including the text and the illustration, and then the next school continues the story, so that together we build a mathematical adventure about Tiny Seed, water and Pi. Have a nice and creative continuation!

4. Create a digital water map for Tiny Seed.

Pi invites all our European schools to create Pi's Water Map for Tiny Seed! Each school finds its exact location on the map and shows how Tiny Seed finds water at your school.

1. Each school adds their pin: A. Find your school on Google Maps → LONG PRESS = RED PIN appears B. Tap the pin → Copy coordinates (e.g. 40.6401° N, 22.9444° E) C. Open the My Maps EDIT LINK → "Add marker" → Paste coordinates D. Upload your PHOTO + write: "Here at [School Name] in [City], Tiny Seed gets water from our [watering can/rain/school garden etc]!" E. Click SAVE 2. Pi's Mathematics challenge: Children practice location (coordinates), distance ("How far is our school from Spain?"), and counting ("How many water solutions are there?"). 3. Explore together: All classes click on partner pins to discover different ways Tiny Seed finds water across Europe!

Partner schools + water = Tiny Seed grows everywhere in Europe!
