How Leaders Think When Plans Change
Start the module
Why this?
As communicated during the Good Foundations workshops, we will provide you with intermittent micro-learning sessions to reinforce key points. This micro-learning is about the power of adaptability, which is at the core of sustainable leadership, something you will need to embrace if you're to progress through your leadership career. Today, we'll look at quotes made by leaders from many different walks of life, advice from a prominent female entrepreneur, and how you can link this back to your recent work on the Good Foundations Programme.

Measuring your adaptability
Adaptability isn’t about changing who you are. It’s about staying effective when circumstances change. As you set out, you won’t always control the plan, but you can control how you respond, learn, and adjust. The habits you build now are the foundations of the leader you become later. Take a look at the below TED talk by Natalie Fratto, American Venture Investor, who talks about how adaptability is one of the key things she looks for when determining which start-up founder to support.

Measuring your adaptability
Natalie talks in depth about why adaptability is, in her opinion, the single most important determinant to her when considering a great founder/leader. She looks for three key things in people to assess this:
- Do they ask 'What if?' questions - do they think forward and try to picture the different possible versions of the future.
- Can they actively seek to 'unlearn' - someone who challenges what they think they already know (how do they return to a beginners mindset?)
- Are they actively exploring what might be coming next - someone who celebrates the wins, but doesn't allow a win to make them complacent (what's lurking beyond the next corner...)
Here's three things you can ask yourself to start thinking with the above in mind:
- When a plan doesn’t work, what’s my default reaction?
- What’s one situation at work where I could test a small pivot?
- What would ‘adaptive leadership’ look like in my role right now (not in 10 years)?

How does Adaptability link to Agency?
Agency is the ability to choose how we respond to a situation. We don’t always control our circumstances, the decisions made around us, or the challenges we face, but we do control how we interpret them, what meaning we give them, and the actions we take next. Adaptability is where agency shows up in practice. When plans change or uncertainty appears, adaptable leaders don’t wait to be told what to do or feel stuck by what’s happened. They take ownership of their response, adjust their approach, and move forward with intent.
Adaptability is the skill. Agency is the mindset that enables it.
