Wild Stallions

I wish my poems used bad language Not afraid to get up and fight Instead of mumbling in the darkness Jump on stage, grab the mic and recite I wish my poems would point fingers Exposing the liars and fools I wish they would run free like wild stallions Instead of being tethered like mules.

I wish my poems would go crazy Hold parties for kids in the street Instead of serenading the moon Go dancing on Mars in bare feet I wish my poems would play dirty Speak out and break all the rules I wish they would run free like wild stallions Instead of being tethered like mules.

I wish my poems had loud voices Not be afraid to raise them and shout Bring shame on the trolls and the bullies Name them and drive them all out I wish my poems would get angry Go on strike and lay down their tools I wish they would run free like wild stallions Instead of being tethered like mules.

I wish my poems would stay youthful Not grow older and wiser with age Seek adventure out in the real world Not confined to the comfort of the page I wish my poems were too dangerous To be published or recited in schools I wish they would run free like wild stallions Instead of being tethered like mules.

A) Which words or phrases does the poet use to show the theme of frustration with limits, rules and restrictions?

Reveal Explainer

The poet begins with the words ‘I wish’ which shows that he is not happy with the way things are and wants things to change. By using personification and imagining his words being able to ‘get up and fight’, the poet suggests he wants to use his words to challenge others. However, the fact that he wishes this shows the poems are currently held back by rules and limits, such as not being allowed to use bad language or fight back.
