Performance Poet

Not an astronaut or a scientist, Not a chef or a vet, and certainly NOT a teacher. When I grow up I want to be a performance poet. I’ve seen them on YouTube and stuff. The way they move about As the words come soaring out, So cool, confident and athletic.

From: Over to You by Roger McGough © 2022. Licensed under CLA. Do not copy or share.

Trouble is, I’m not cool, and as for Moving about, Wayne and my sister giggle As the words come pouring out. “Stop!” they yell. “You’re pathetic!” But I have a plan. It will be the poetry that performs, not me. I will just stand on stage, close my eyes and set the language loose on the crowd. If it doesn’t work, it won’t be my fault. I can blame the poems. I can’t wait. All I need now is a catchy stage name (and another two hundred poems).

This suggests that being a performance poet isn’t just about writing poems but is also about how you perform them in front of an audience. By watching performances on YouTube, the speaker has noticed how body language and movement are important when performing poetry. A successful performance poet would need confidence and a strong physical presence on stage.
