Главный программный документ Южного общества - "Русская правда" П.И. Пестеля. Документ предполагал цареубийство. После переворота власть переходит на 10 лет к Народному вече, которое проведет все необходимые реформы. Россия станет республикой, в которой все органы власти будут выборными, с равенством прав и свобод, гражданским обществом. В плане аграрного вопроса документ предполагал конфискацию помещичьих земель и земель императорской фамилии. Из них образовывался Земельный фонд, одна часть которого раздавалась тем, кто землю обрабатывал - крестьянству, а вторая - всем желающим.

Вскоре союз распался из-за разочарования в Александре Первом, на которого общество возглагало надежды по переустройству России.
Союз благоденствия появился в 1818 году. Уставом организации была "Зеленая книга". Участники: А.Н. и Н.М. Муравьевы, С.И. и М.И. Муравьевы-Апостолы, П.И. Пестель, И.Д. Якушкин, М.С. Лунин и др. Цель общества - просвещение народа, избавление от крепостного гнета. Сами участники стремились облегчить положение своих крепостных крестьян. Также целью общества было развитие конституционализма. Ввиду усиления охранительных начал в последние годы царствования Александра Первого, стало понятно, что нужны более тайные и законспирированные организации. Поэтому Союз благоденствия распался.
