Outdoor Learning Review – French in the Playground
If possible, take the class outside or use a hall for an active recap of key language.
Weather stations: chalk or place weather symbols around the space. Call a phrase and children run to the matching symbol and do the action.
Days hopscotch: draw the days in a line. Children jump along saying each day.
Number line run: call a French number from un to dix, children run to the correct space.
Adapt with ideas from your Outdoor Learning Pack depending on space and weather. (the Outdoor Learning Lingobox is linked on the next slide).
Movement helps language “stick” and shows children that French isn’t only for the classroom.
Quel temps fait-il?
il pleut
il fait chaud
il fait froid
il fait beau
il y a du soleil
il neige
il y a du vent
il fait gris
Whole class French challenge!
Click the stars in the lesson slide to reveal 5 French challenges.
You can invite children to volunteer to complete the challenges and then do them as a whole class.
Finish by telling children that they have learned so much French already! Bravo tout le monde !
This reinforces confidence and helps children feel proud of their learning so far.
Play-stations
Set up 3–4 simple trays or table stations, each linked to a different theme. Weather tray: cotton “clouds”, yellow counters for sun, blue gems for rain. Colours tray: loose parts, pens or blocks sorted by colour. Numbers tray: dice, number cards, small objects to count. Feelings or greetings tray: puppets, emoji faces, mirrors for role-play. Move around modelling simple French words and phrases as children play. These stations offer sensory, hands-on consolidation and work well as a calm mid-lesson focus.
Childrens' Choice
Invite children to choose their favourite French activities from earlier lessons.
Show the short menu inlcuded in the lesson slide (numbers song, days song, Weather Conga, colours game, Où est Bobo ? - Where is Bobo? game etc.)
Let the class vote by raising hands, moving to corners, or choosing picture cards.
Count up the votes in French - if this is more than 10, use the Numbers to 20 or Numbers to 31 Soundboards to help you.
Star Tracker!
Use the Star Tracker to complete the latest activities (e.g. colouring in the colour dots etc.)
Guide children through the tracker: ask them to show your learning to to colour in the achievement stars.
Use lots of praise and keep it light – the focus is on effort and participation.
This gives you a quick snapshot of learning while building children’s sense of achievement.
