Archaeological Field Report: Sector T-24 (Italica)

  • Location: Northern Terrace, Italica (Province of Seville)
  • Site Characteristics: We have uncovered a massive rectangular platform measuring approximately 100 by 60 meters. The foundation is made of very thick concrete, suggesting it supported an immense weight.
  • Key Findings:
    • Artifact A: Large fragments of high-quality white marble columns, a lot larger than those found in the nearby residential villas.
    • Artifact B: A broken inscription containing the letters "TRAIA..." and a sculpted hand holding a scepter.
    • Structure C: A sophisticated drainage system surrounding the perimeter, indicating the area was open to the rain.
What conclusions can you draw from this information?

Circle the correct form of the verb in each sentence. Pay attention to whether the action is a finished event or a long, continuing action.

  1. In the early days of Rome, artists wanted / were wanting to make every statue look like a real person.
  2. While the sculptor worked / was working on the white marble, his tool broke / was breaking.
  3. In the 4th century, the style of the faces became / was becoming very simple and rigid.
  4. While the empire changed / was changing, the artists began / were beginning to use different techniques.
  5. The large eyes on the new statues appeared / were appearing very strange to the people.
  6. A master artist showed / was showing his apprentices how to cut the stone yesterday.
  7. While the sun shone / was shining in the workshop, the painters finished / were finishing the wall.

  9. While the workers moved / were moving the heavy stones, they talked / were talking about the new Emperor.
  10. The artist knew / was knowing that the gold glass was / was being very expensive.

Initial Assessment: Given the scale and materials, the building can't be a private house. The marble and the inscription suggest it must be a temple dedicated to the Emperor. However, because we found various smaller pedestals, the courtyard might be a space where city officials also placed statues of local heroes.

Can you name other things we enjoy today that have a classical origin?
