During the Civil War, President abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) freed the slaves with the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863.

Harriett Tubmen (1820-1913)
escaped slavery in 1849 from Maryland. She then helped hundreds of slaves to flee to the north and even to Canada through The Underground Railroad.

The Ku Klux Klan (KKK) was founded then it extended into almost every southern state by 1870. Its members waged an underground campaign of intimidation and violence directed at white and Black Republican leaders.
