During the Civil War, President abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) freed the slaves with the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863.

Harriett Tubmen (1820-1913)

escaped slavery in 1849 from Maryland. She then helped hundreds of slaves to flee to the north and even to Canada through The Underground Railroad.

Frederick Douglas (1818-1895), a former slave and the first African American abolisionist to publish an autobiography.
