Dribbling

Billy: Dribbling is something people have stopped doing in recent years because the game has become more about pace and power. So why have we included it in our list of attributes for the ultimate player? Because we predict it’s going to make a comeback any day now. Jez: That’s right, we’re calling it, right here, right now: dribbling is going to be big again. In my opinion it is one of those skills that makes a player a true great. The likes of Messi, Ozïl, Ronaldo, Neymar all share that ability to dribble past players and change the game. Billy: It never completely went away, to be fair… Jez: True words. And you need dribbling in your locker. You can ping the ball between you and your teammates all day if you’re good enough, but sometimes you need to run at opponents with the ball at your feet. So that’s another reason why we’ve selected dribbling – because it is a crucial part of a team’s attacking options, and because it scares the life out of defenders.

Billy: It does, it really does. If you get this one right, you will terrify your opponents. I see it so often: defenders scared out of their mind because a player is running at them with the ball at his feet. Jez: There are two types of dribbling: running with the ball and dribbling with close control. Billy: If you want to become lethal, it’s really important that you’re able to keep the ball stuck to your foot so you can run in different directions. If you can dribble at pace the game really opens up for you.

Dribbling Drill – Ball Control

With our dribbling drill, you will get your speed up, improve your footwork and awareness, and learn to run with your head up. It is particularly useful for when you are dealing in tight spaces.

Instructions: 1. Put three cones on the ground in a triangle or line, each one spaced three feet apart. 2. Dribble the ball between the cones. 3. Be sure to use all the surfaces of your boots. 4. Rock some super quick touches to guide the ball about the cones in a controlled pattern.

Pro tip: Ready to get serious? To take it to the next level, simply move the cones so they are even more tightly spaced – how about two feet apart?
