Tekkers

Billy: Tekkers is a big deal for The F2 but also an attribute that is frequently misunderstood by fans. You see, tekkers is about more than entertaining the crowd. It’s not just about flash tricks or self-indulgent skills. It’s an important part of the game and is so much more than being flash. Jez: Oh, so much more. Tekkers is only tekkers if it helps the team do well. It’s got to be about the team and winning, not just about one player showing off. Billy: Exactly, Jez. Tekkers is your ID. It’s who you are as a player. And when you look at the best players down the years, their technique is simply just better that anyone else’s. Look at my favourite, Ronaldinho: his technique is probably better than almost anyone in history. Jez: Having ultimate tekkers is being the most entertaining and fluid footballer, with the most flair. It’s the difference between just scoring a free kick and getting it top bins. It’s about that extra bit of quality. It’s finding a whole new level.

Billy: Some people can kind of control the ball – but some people can really control the ball and do it in their stride. Deli Alli is a good example of that. He has exceptional receiving skills. He can receive it on his chest, heel, thigh or foot. Or over his shoulder. That’s tekkers right there. When you can receive a cross-field ball that has travelled 50 yards to you and stop it dead, that’s tekkers. To kill the ball dead is just that next level up. Then again, being able to deliver that pass in the first place and put it on a button is tekkers. When a ball like that just slices through the air, that’s beautiful football. The standard of football is being raised all the time and it makes the game better to watch. I feel blessed to be alive at this moment in time, when football is getting more and more entertaining. I feel blessed to be here at a time when technique is becoming more important and more intricate.
